Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night, the highly anticipated movie, was originally scheduled to debut on September 10, 2022. However, an unfortunate announcement has revealed that its release has been delayed due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the anime industry.
The official website of the movie shared the news, explaining that the nationwide spread of the COVID-19 infection has caused production delays, leading to the postponement of Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night. The producers expressed their sincere apologies to fans who were eagerly anticipating the film and acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the delay. They assured fans that the staff had been diligently working to prepare for the release and expressed their regret for any disappointment caused.
Not only has the movie’s release been affected, but the accompanying soundtrack release has also been postponed. This setback highlights the challenges faced by the entertainment industry as it continues to navigate the ongoing global health crisis.
Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night serves as a direct sequel to the 2021 film Sword Art Online -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night. It is based on the Progressive light novels by Reki Kawahara, the creator of the Sword Art Online series. The Progressive films offer a more detailed and expanded retelling of the “Aincrad” story arc, providing audiences with a deeper exploration of the individual floors within the perilous virtual world.
The upcoming movie specifically takes viewers to the fifth floor of Aincrad, an expansive and intricate ruin filled with challenges and secrets. The story revolves around Kirito and Asuna, who venture forth in search of valuable equipment and treasure that could aid them in their quest to defeat the boss on Floor 5 and progress to the next level. While the trailer promises thrilling combat and action sequences, promotional artwork suggests that the film will also delve into the developing romance between the two main characters, offering moments of levity amidst the intense gameplay.
The sequel’s development is being handled by A-1 Productions, the same studio that worked on Aria of a Starless Night. Ayako Kono, known for her work on The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky, returns as the chief director, while Kento Toya, the animation director of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, takes charge once again. Additionally, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu reprise their iconic roles as Kirito and Asuna, respectively, adding familiarity and continuity to the beloved characters.
As of now, the new release date for Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night has not been confirmed. Fans will have to patiently await further updates on the movie’s progress. In the meantime, fans can still enjoy the Progressive light novels, which are distributed in English by Yen Press, to dive deeper into the intricacies of the Aincrad world and the adventures of Kirito and Asuna.
