“Tokyo Revengers manga concludes after 5 and a half years, author expresses gratitude”

Ken Wakui’s popular manga series, Tokyo Revengers, came to an end in the latest issue of Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine (#51/2022) after a successful run of 5 and a half years. The final chapter was accompanied by a cover featuring many of the beloved characters from the series. As a bonus, the magazine also included a lengthy interview with the author and stickers featuring the various teams from the story. On the same day, the official Twitter page of Tokyo Revengers shared the author’s heartfelt message and a special illustration as a token of appreciation to the fans.

In his comment on the final chapter, Ken Wakui expressed his gratitude, saying, “Today, on November 16, marks the end of Tokyo Revengers (^^) It has been 5 and a half years since the series began. I laughed out loud during the funny episodes and shed tears during the intense ones. I poured my heart and soul into creating this manga. It has been an incredible journey with the members of Toman. Thank you very much to all the readers for their support throughout these 5 and a half years!”

The accompanying illustration depicted the author, seemingly exhausted, slumped over his desk while surrounded by the characters of Tokyo Revengers, including the protagonist Takemichi Hanagaki. In the illustration, Draken, the vice leader of the Tokyo Manji Gang, humorously asks if the author is dead. The words “Tokyo Revengers Finale” can be seen at the top, while the bottom reads “Fin.”

The official Twitter page had been counting down the remaining days until the finale since October 19 when the announcement to conclude the series was made. The countdown concluded with a determined statement from Takemichi Hanagaki, the main character, declaring his resolve to prevent any further loss of life.

To celebrate the manga’s conclusion, a special trailer was released a day before the finale, giving fans a nostalgic glimpse into the series. The manga’s 30th volume, along with its spin-off series, is scheduled for release on November 17.

Ken Wakui launched Tokyo Revengers in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in March 2017, and it quickly gained popularity. The series has sold over 65 million copies and will have a total of 31 volumes. The manga has also inspired anime adaptations by Studio LIDEN FILMS, with the first season airing from April to September 2021 and the sequel, covering the manga’s Christmas Conflict arc, set to premiere in January 2023.

English-speaking fans can enjoy the manga as well, as Kodansha has been publishing an English version, with the latest 27th volume released as an e-book on October 11, 2022. The official website describes the plot of Tokyo Revengers as a story about Takemichi Hanagaki, who, after learning about the death of his middle school girlfriend, travels back in time to his younger days in order to change the tragic fate of those around him and rise to the top of the Tokyo Manji Gang, a notorious delinquent group in Kanto.
