Sword Art Online fans can look forward to a new movie hitting theaters in February 2023

Crunchyroll and Aniplex of America have joined forces to bring the highly anticipated film, Sword Art Online, the Movie -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night, to theaters across Crunchyroll’s English-speaking territories in February 2023. This thrilling sci-fi action adventure will make its debut in the United Kingdom and Ireland on February 1, followed by Australia and New Zealand on February 2, and the United States and Canada on February 3. Additional release dates for Europe and Latin America will be announced soon. Fans will have the option to enjoy the film in its original Japanese with English subtitles or dubbed in English.

Scherzo of Deep Night serves as the much-awaited sequel to Sword Art Online, the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night (2021), which is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll.com. The story follows Asuna, the protagonist, as she continues her perilous journey through the virtual reality death game, where every defeat means a real-world fatality.

Sword Art Online originated as a light novel series published by Dengeki Bunko, written by Reki Kawahara, the recipient of the 15th Dengeki Bunko Novel Grand Prize. The narrative revolves around Kirito, the main character, and his heroic exploits as a player in Sword Art Online, a cutting-edge VRMMORPG (virtual reality massive multiplayer online role-playing game). Since the first volume’s release in April 2009, the light novel series has garnered immense popularity, with worldwide sales exceeding 30 million copies as of 2022.

The synopsis for the upcoming movie sets the stage for thrilling encounters: “This may be a game, but it’s not something you play.
