It may be a challenge to fathom the prospect of a cherished animated classic like Monsters, Inc. (2001) undergoing the live-action treatment. Yet, when one examines Disney’s trajectory over the past several years, it becomes somewhat more conceivable, albeit not without a touch of lament.
Disney’s journey into the realm of live-action adaptations began in earnest with The Jungle Book (2016), followed in quick succession by Beauty and the Beast (2017), Christopher Robin (2018), Aladdin (2019), and The Lion King (2019), to name just a handful. These endeavors often stirred a mixture of nostalgia and skepticism among fans.
Fast forward to today, where Peter Pan and Wendy (2023) has soared onto Disney+ screens, and the highly-anticipated live-action rendition of The Little Mermaid (2023) is set to make a big splash in theaters later this month. The trend shows no sign of abating, as Disney has announced plans to adapt more of its animated classics into live-action, with Lilo & Stitch (2002), Bambi (1942), and even Moana (release date to be announced) all in the pipeline.
However, it’s the mention of Moana that raises eyebrows. While Disney’s relentless pursuit of remakes may not come as a surprise, the idea of reimagining a relatively recent computer-generated animated film like Moana in live-action form hints at a sense of creative restlessness or even desperation.
So, where does this trend end? Certain films, like Toy Story (1995) and Zootopia (2016), may seemingly remain immune to live-action adaptation because they predominantly feature non-human characters. However, even a film like Monsters, Inc., with just one human character, the endearing Boo (Mary Gibbs), could eventually find itself on the operating table for a live-action makeover.
While no official announcement has been made regarding a live-action reboot of Monsters, Inc., the possibility lingers in the air. After all, when you consider that Disney has Moana, a relatively contemporary CGI-animated film, on its radar, it’s not entirely far-fetched.
The likelihood is that we’ll witness the live-action treatment given to films like Tangled (2010) and Frozen (2013) long before Monsters, Inc. enters the fray. However, in the ever-evolving landscape of Disney’s cinematic universe, one can never say never.
To provide a sense of nostalgia, here’s the official synopsis of Monsters, Inc. available on Disney+:
“In the bustling world of Monstropolis, the lovable Sulley (John Goodman) and his wisecracking partner Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) are the top scare duo at MONSTERS, INC., the scream-processing factory. But when a curious little girl named Boo enters their world, it’s the monsters who find themselves unnerved. Now, it’s up to Sulley and Mike to protect Boo and find a way to return her to her own world. The film features a stellar cast including John Goodman as James ‘Sulley’ Sullivan, Billy Crystal as Mike Wazowski, Jenifer Tilly as Celia, and Steve Buscemi as Randall Boggs.”
As Disney continues to explore new frontiers in the world of live-action adaptations, fans and enthusiasts can only wait and see what beloved classics may be next in line for a cinematic rebirth.
