In my personal view, Inside Out stands as one of the finest animated films ever crafted. It masterfully captures the essence of adolescence, portraying the challenges that accompany growing up.
Now, we’re in for a delightful sequel, but what can we expect from Inside Out 2?
When is the film’s release? Despite director Pete Docter stating in 2015 that he had no sequel idea for Inside Out, he left room for possibilities, and that’s how we’ve arrived here.
Last year at the D23 Expo, they surprised fans with the announcement of the sequel and a release date. Inside Out 2 will hit theaters in the summer of 2024. Kelsey Mann will direct it, and Meg LeFauve, who worked on the original, will pen the script.
Will the original cast return? Amy Poehler, the voice behind Joy, one of Riley’s emotions, is set to reprise her role. She even shared her excitement about the script, calling it “amazing.”
Others making a return include Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, and Diane Lane as Riley’s mom.
However, it’s worth noting that Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader, who voiced Disgust and Fear, respectively, won’t be returning. This decision could be related to reports that Poehler was offered $5 million for her role, while the rest of the cast was offered $100,000.
Kaling confirmed her absence in an interview with The Wrap, saying, “I had a great time working on Inside Out and am sure Inside Out 2 will be great. But I’m not working on it.”
Despite Kaling and Hader’s absence, Inside Out 2 will introduce a host of new characters in the form of additional emotions residing within Riley.
What’s the plot of Inside Out 2? At the end of the first film, the emotions come across a button labeled “puberty” and hesitate to press it. However, there are hints that Riley is already moving in that direction, as she interacts with a boy at one of her hockey games during the final scene of the film and goes on a date in the Disney short titled Riley’s First Date. This suggests that Inside Out 2 will follow Riley’s journey through puberty and her struggles with teenage life.
A brief synopsis for the film states, “Follow Riley, in her teenage years encountering new emotions.”
Amy Poehler mentioned shortly after the sequel’s announcement that the film will indeed revolve around puberty.
“In some ways, Inside Out set itself up for a sequel, and we’re going there. We’re going to explore what it feels like to be a teenager, the new emotions that inhabit a young person’s mind. In many ways, it’s really exciting. We knew exactly where we were. We’re delving into the teenage brain and witnessing the chaos that resides within,” she shared with People.
