The iconic tradition of featuring a talking-animals song in Disney movies continues with the upcoming musical “Wish” (set to hit theaters on November 22). In this exclusive preview, we get a glimpse of the lively tune titled “I’m a Star,” an original composition by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, forming part of the film’s soundtrack set to release on November 17.
“Wish” revolves around the character Asha, voiced by Ariana DeBose, a hopeful young woman residing in the kingdom of Rosas. Asha, seeking to aid her people, makes a wish upon a star, setting her on a collision course with the antagonistic King Magnifico, portrayed by Chris Pine. The wish summons a spirited cosmic character named Star, whose magical dust empowers Asha’s pet goat Valentino (Alan Tudyk), along with rabbits, deer, and even mushrooms, to join in a cheerful song celebrating the inherent magic within all of us.
Director Chris Buck, known for his work on “Frozen,” explains the thematic connection, stating, “We found out that actually, scientifically, all humans are made up of stardust. So it was such a great idea that Asha’s wishing on a star but then realizes she’s made of the same thing. She’s made of the same hope and optimism and all of that joy that star brings and then realizes everybody else has that same power.”
Fawn Veerasunthorn, co-director and storyboard artist on “Frozen,” “Moana,” and “Zootopia,” likens the song to past Disney classics like “Under the Sea” and “Be Our Guest,” noting its ability to convey the film’s theme joyfully.
The song “I’m a Star” and Asha’s “This Wish” pay homage to Disney’s legacy on its 100th anniversary. Veerasunthorn emphasizes the joyous experience, describing the song as a celebration of inspiration. Disney fans have already embraced “Wish” music, with “This Wish” reaching No. 2 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50.
Buck expresses his love for musicals, emphasizing the lasting impact of the songs beyond the film, as they become personal for audiences. He relishes the experience of hearing the audience sing along during theater viewings, finding it to be a gratifying testament to the enduring magic of Disney’s musical creations.
