Taku Kawamura’s manga spinoff, “Kakegurui (Kakkokari)” is set to conclude its run in the September issue of Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine, scheduled to be released on September 22. Since its debut in December 2016, the four-panel comedy spinoff has provided fans of the original “Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler” manga series with a lighthearted and humorous take on the intense and high-stakes world of gambling.
Created by writer Homura Kawamoto and artist Tōru Naomura, the “Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler” manga premiered in Gangan Joker back in March 2014, captivating readers with its gripping storyline. The manga takes place in Hyakkaou Private Academy, an exclusive institution where the children of the wealthy and influential are trained in the art of gambling. Here, success and social standing are determined by one’s ability to outwit and manipulate opponents in games of chance. Yumeko Jabami, the series’ protagonist, disrupts the status quo with her unconventional and fearless approach to gambling, challenging the hierarchy of power within the academy.
The popularity of “Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler” led to the creation of a television anime series, which aired in Japan from July to September 2017. The anime later gained international recognition when it premiered on Netflix in February 2018. A second season followed in January 2019, with Netflix streaming the series worldwide starting from June 2019. Sentai Filmworks obtained the license for both seasons and plans to release them on home video with an English dub.
Not limited to anime adaptations, the “Kakegurui” franchise expanded its reach further with a live-action television show that debuted in Japan in January 2018. Netflix also streamed the series outside of Japan. The success of the live-action adaptation led to a second season in March 2019 and the release of the first live-action film in May 2019. Despite facing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a sequel live-action film finally premiered in Japan in June 2021, further solidifying the franchise’s presence in the entertainment industry.
In addition to “Kakegurui (Kakkokari),” another spinoff manga titled “Kakegurui Twins,” created by Katsura Saiki, launched in Gangan Joker in September 2015. The popularity of this spinoff resulted in a live-action series that premiered on Amazon Prime in Japan in March 2021, as well as an anime adaptation that debuted on Netflix worldwide on August 4.
While the conclusion of “Kakegurui (Kakkokari)” marks the end of this particular spinoff manga, the broader “Kakegurui” franchise continues to captivate audiences with its thrilling narrative and unique exploration of the psychology behind gambling. Fans eagerly anticipate what new developments and adaptations the future holds for this fascinating series.
