Fans of the popular anime series, Sword Art Online, will be excited to know that Kirito and Asuna are returning to the big screen in the upcoming film, “Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night.” The film is the second installment of the Sword Art Online-Progressive film series and is set to premiere in theaters throughout Japan on October 22, 2023.
The announcement was made on the film’s official website and was accompanied by a stunning piece of promotional artwork. The film was originally scheduled to debut on September 10, but production delays caused by the nationwide spread of COVID-19 forced the release date to be pushed back. Additionally, the advanced film screening that was supposed to take place on August 24 had to be postponed, along with the soundtrack.
The Sword Art Online Progressive films are based on the Progressive light novels written by creator Reki Kawahara. They retell and expand upon the series’ first main arc, known as the “Aincrad” story arc. This storyline follows Kirito, the main protagonist, and Asuna Yuuki as they get trapped in the virtual reality game Sword Art Online along with 10,000 other players. The two must fight their way through the main dungeon with the ultimate goal of defeating the game’s final boss and escaping the virtual world.
The plot of “Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night” is currently being kept under wraps, but what is known is that Kirito and Asuna will be seeking out powerful equipment to defeat the boss on Floor 5 and progress further in the dungeon.
Fans of the series will be pleased to know that several members of the crew from the previous Progressive film, “Aria of a Starless Night” (2021), have returned to direct the sequel. Ayako Kohno has returned to direct the movie, with Yusa Ito serving as Art Director alongside Character Designer Kento Toya. Yuki Kaijura is once again composing the film’s music, and Eir Aoi, who has performed multiple theme songs for the Sword Art Online anime series, will perform the film’s theme song, “Shinzo.” Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu will also reprise their roles as Kirito Kirigawa and Asuna Yuuki, respectively.
The previous film, “Aria of a Starless Night,” debuted in theaters in Japan on October 30, 2021. It received critical acclaim for its portrayal of Asuna, whose point of view was central to the story. The film recounts the character’s journey, starting with her life as an ordinary high schooler until she becomes trapped inside the titular VR death game and must learn to survive in an unfamiliar and dangerous new world. By the end of December, the film had earned more than 1.32 billion yen (equivalent to about 11.62 million USD) at the Japanese box office.
For those who can’t wait to watch the new film, all seasons of Sword Art Online are available to stream on Crunchyroll. The series’ light novels are also available in English from Yen Press.
