With the Danganronpa franchise currently on hiatus, fans have been eagerly awaiting a new entry in the series. While there’s no official word on when the next Danganronpa game will be released, there is still a reason for fans to be excited: Master Detective Archives: Rain Code. Produced under the direction of Kazutaka Kodaka, the creative mind behind Danganronpa, this game shares many similarities with the beloved series and should scratch that murder-mystery itch that fans have been feeling.
Announced back in 2021, Master Detective Archives: Rain Code is being co-developed by Spike Chunsoft and Too Kyo Games, the studio Kodaka formed after leaving Spike Chunsoft in 2017. This collaboration is a promising sign that the game will deliver a solid experience, but the similarities between Rain Code and Danganronpa don’t end there. Composer Masafumi Takada, who worked on the music for Danganronpa, is returning to create the soundtrack for Rain Code. Lucien Dodge, who voiced Danganronpa characters Kiibo and Hifumi Yamada, will also be lending his voice acting talents to the protagonist Yuma.
In terms of setting, Rain Code takes place in Kanai Ward, a rainy and noir-ish city controlled by a megacorporation. This is similar to the Towa Conglomerate-controlled Towa City in Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, which also has a dystopian feel. While Rain Code isn’t a third-person shooter like Ultra Despair Girls, it still captures that futuristic and eerie atmosphere that Danganronpa fans know and love.
The gameplay in Rain Code follows a similar formula to Danganronpa, with players investigating mysteries and battling through lies and contradictions to uncover the truth. Players take on the role of Yuma Kokohead, an amnesiac detective-in-training, and Shinigami, the death god contracted to haunt him. These are two tropes that are familiar to fans of the Danganronpa franchise, as Trigger Happy Havoc’s Kyoko Kirigiri also has amnesia and is a detective. However, Rain Code adds a fresh twist with its Mystery Labyrinths, which provide a unique puzzle-solving experience.
Players will also encounter other Master Detectives from the World Detective Organization, who possess a unique Forensic Forte that makes them experts in a particular aspect of investigation. These detectives are similar to Danganronpa’s Ultimate characters and are sure to have interesting and quirky personalities. While it’s unclear how these detectives will factor into gameplay, they are sure to play a key role in the story of Rain Code.
Overall, Master Detective Archives: Rain Code looks like a promising addition to the murder-mystery genre, with enough similarities to Danganronpa to satisfy fans while offering a fresh take on the formula. It’s set to release in 2023 for the Nintendo Switch, and fans can’t wait to dive into the rainy and mysterious world of Kanai Ward.
