“Kakegurui,” like many other anime, is based on a manga of the same name. Originally released in 2017, the anime gained global popularity when it was streamed on Netflix in 2018, leading to a second season called “Kakegurui xx.” The story revolves around transfer student Yumeko Jabami, who finds herself in a high school where ruthless gambling determines social status. Unfortunately for Yumeko, she is uncontrollably addicted to gambling, adding to the dark and intense nature of the series.

One of the standout characters in “Kakegurui” is Mary Saotome, initially an opponent of Yumeko but later becoming one of her allies. Mary’s popularity among fans prompted the publication of a spin-off prequel manga called “Kakegurui Twin” in 2015. Fast forward seven years, and Netflix has recently made an exciting announcement for fans, especially those who enjoyed the spin-off.

“Kakegurui Twin” is a prequel anime that delves into Mary’s earlier years. Netflix initially revealed this spin-off during its “Anime Day” live stream in 2021, but updates on the production had been scarce until June 5 when a two-minute trailer was released, teasing the return to Hyakkao Private Academy. The trailer also unveiled that the new series would be available starting August 4.

The production of “Kakegurui Twin” reportedly involves the same animation company, MAPPA, as the original series, along with much of the recurring cast. Set in Hyakkou Private Academy, the prequel follows Mary’s journey during her first year in the world of high-stakes gambling, shedding light on her rise to the position seen in the original series. With an underdog element, the manga reveals Mary to be financially disadvantaged compared to her peers.

Fans can expect “Kakegurui Twin” to remain faithful to the original source material, as the original series was devoid of filler episodes. For those eagerly anticipating more content from “Kakegurui,” a live-action adaptation covering the original storyline is also available for streaming on Netflix. It is important to note that “Kakegurui” and its related media are considered mature content, so viewer discretion is advised. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, resources and support are available through organizations like the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
