Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 4 is set to hit theaters in 2024, and here’s all you need to know about the upcoming sequel.
After exploring the Mushroom Kingdom with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Illumination is returning to the world of Gru and the Minions, making it nearly seven years since the last primary Despicable Me film.
The Despicable Me franchise has been a massive success for Illumination and Universal, earning over $4.4 billion globally through its three mainline movies and two Minion spin-offs. It’s now the highest-grossing animated franchise ever and shows no signs of slowing down as it heads into Despicable Me 4.
Release Date: Universal confirmed that Despicable Me 4 will arrive in theaters on July 3, 2024. It’s expected to go up against Disney’s live-action Lion King prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King. The ongoing strikes in Hollywood may impact the release date, but Steve Carell, who voices Gru, has stated that he’s started recording for the film.
Cast: While only a few actors have been officially announced, more cast members may be revealed as the movie’s release approaches. Confirmed actors include Steve Carell as Gru, Kirsten Wiig as Lucy Wilde, Miranda Cosgrove as Margo, and Steve Coogan as Silas Ramsbottom. It’s likely that Dana Gaier will reprise her role as Edith, and Nev Scharrel will return as Agnes.
Plot: The exact storyline for Despicable Me 4 is under wraps, but Steve Carell hinted that it would be a continuation of the family’s story, with Gru and Lucy being married and their children becoming part of the Anti-Villain League.
Where to Watch: Despicable Me 4 will have a full international theatrical release. It will also be available on various on-demand platforms and might eventually come to NBCUniversal’s Peacock app or Netflix.
Trailer: While there’s no trailer yet, one is expected soon. It could be attached to Illumination’s upcoming release, “Migration,” which comes out in December 2023.
Franchise Overview: Currently, the Despicable Me franchise consists of four mainline films, two Minion-focused spin-offs, mobile games, and a Universal Studios Orlando theme park attraction.
So mark your calendars for Despicable Me 4, set to hit theaters on July 3, 2024.
