DC Studios, under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran, is pushing ahead with its ambitious slate of movies, and the latest addition to the lineup is ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’ The standalone feature, centered on the Kryptonian cousin of Superman, will be written by Ana Nogueira, an accomplished actress and playwright making her mark in screenwriting.
This project marks a significant development for Nogueira, who was initially brought on board in 2022 to pen a Supergirl movie during Warner Bros.’ attempts to create a spinoff from ‘The Flash,’ which was in post-production at the time. The original plan was to feature Sasha Calle as Supergirl and potentially launch a new DC film franchise. However, this vision was revised when Gunn and Safran took charge of the reorganized DC arm, scrapping the previous Supergirl project as part of their broader effort to create an entirely new slate.
The decision to revisit Supergirl in the new DC Studios framework emerged early this year, revealing a project unrelated to ‘The Flash’ and connected to a comic book mini-series penned by Tom King in 2021 and 2022. This series aimed to redefine Supergirl, moving beyond the traditional ‘girl version of Superman’ narrative. In a video released on Twitter, Gunn explained the unique perspective, stating, ‘Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.’
Ana Nogueira’s return to the project is notable, given her earlier involvement in the 2022 Supergirl movie. Gunn and Safran appreciated her work on the original project, leading them to bring her back for this revised version and even offering her an overall DC writing deal. The plot details for ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ are being kept under wraps, but it is expected to explore a new and distinct narrative for the iconic character.
While Nogueira is recognized for her on-screen appearances, including roles in ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ ‘The Michael J. Fox Show,’ and the recent Starz series ‘Hightown,’ she has also been carving a successful path in the writing realm. Her play ‘Which Way to the Stage’ premiered off-Broadway in 2022, showcasing her versatility as a creative force. Additionally, Nogueira is actively working on an adaptation of author Alice Sola Kim’s short story ‘Mothers, Lock Up Your Daughters,’ a project set up at Warner Bros. with 21 Laps producing.
As ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ gains momentum under the creative leadership of Ana Nogueira, James Gunn, and Peter Safran, it adds another layer of anticipation to the evolving DC Studios landscape.
