TikTok has become one of the most popular social media applications in the world, with many communities catering to different interests and hobbies, including MangaTok. Among these communities, there are certain manga that have gone viral through the platform, either as pre-existing classics that have found new life through the community or niche series that have managed to achieve mainstream success. One of the most popular titles on MangaTok is Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura, which exploded in popularity during 2020 due to multiple trends of content creators attempting to replicate the infamous facial expressions made by characters throughout the series. The series follows Light Yagami, a teenager who comes across a mysterious notebook known as the “Death Note” that can kill anyone given the user knows the target’s real name and face. Despite its age, Death Note still holds up as one of the best psychological thriller manga series of all time and features sociopolitical themes that are tragically timeless.
Lastly, Vagabond, created by Takehiko Inoue, is a classic manga that has been given new life thanks to the series going viral on MangaTok. While the manga adaptation of Eiji Yoshikawa’s 1935 novel Musashi never reached its conclusion, Vagabond remains one of the greatest seinen titles of all time and is shockingly faithful to its setting and time period. The series follows Shinmen Takezou and his friend, Matahachi Hon’iden, as they attempt to earn glory and respect by enlisting in the Toyotomi army, only to suffer a devastating defeat at the hands of the Tokugawa Clan. Despite the manga being in “perma-hiatus,” Vagabond continues to captivate new generations of manga fans.
