Darling in the FranXX was a joint collaboration between Studio Trigger and A-1 Pictures, and it quickly became one of the most talked-about anime series of the Winter 2018 season. Now, fans can delve deeper into the making of the series and see how it all began.
One of the most striking aspects of Darling in the FranXX was its character design, particularly that of its lead character, Zero Two. It turns out that her initial character design was quite different from her final appearance, and fans can now see how she evolved over time.
The early character designs reveal a much more subdued version of Zero Two, with dark hair and a more intense gaze. Her trademark bright pink locks were not yet present, and her pilot suit was more revealing than the final design. Interestingly, the other pilots in the series were also originally designed with bright hair, much like Zero Two.
However, despite these early changes, the design for the main character, Hiro, was apparently nailed from the very beginning. His initial sketch closely resembles his final design, with only minor differences in his school uniform.
For those who want to see these characters in action, Darling in the FranXX is currently available for streaming on both Crunchyroll and Funimation. The series is set in a distant future where humanity lives in mobile fortresses and fights against mysterious giant organisms called Kyoryu using robots called FRANXX. The story follows a group of children who operate these robots and their encounters with the enigmatic Zero Two.
Darling in the FranXX was directed by Atsushi Nishigori, who served as the character designer for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Toshifumi Akai, the animation director for Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, served as the assistant director. Masayoshi Tanaka, who worked on anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, was the character designer, and Shigeto Koyama, who was responsible for the mechanical designs in Michiko and Hatchin, provided the mechanical designs. Hiroyuki Imaishi, who directed Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill, served as the action supervisor.
Despite garnering both positive and negative attention, Darling in the FranXX remains a standout anime series for its unique story, memorable characters, and stunning visuals.
