Must-Watch DCEU Films and Series Ahead of DCU Launch

James Gunn and Peter Safran are spearheading DC’s new cinematic universe, but they’re not entirely abandoning the old DCEU. Several key actors—Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, John Cena as Peacemaker, and Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle—are reprising their roles under Gunn. Their involvement underscores the importance of watching certain DCEU movies and shows before the DCU launches.

First up is “Suicide Squad,” which introduced Viola Davis as the ruthless Amanda Waller. Despite a soft reboot in Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” the original film remains essential for understanding Waller’s character.

Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” not only brings back Davis but also introduces Cena’s Peacemaker, providing crucial context for his upcoming series in the DCU.

Speaking of which, “Peacemaker” will have significant implications for the DCU, with its second season linking directly to Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie. Expect to see familiar faces from the show making appearances in the new franchise.

“Black Adam” is another movie to watch, as it features Waller and introduces the Justice Society, tying into the broader DCU narrative.

Even “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” has relevance, especially its end-credits scene, which hints at connections to the Justice Society and Amanda Waller.

While “The Flash” may not directly feature DCEU actors, its exploration of time travel and alternate timelines will likely have ramifications for understanding the DCU’s new direction.

Lastly, “Blue Beetle” introduces Xolo Maridueña’s character, who will play a part in the DCU despite the movie itself not being part of it. Watching these select DCEU titles will provide valuable context for the upcoming DCU.
