The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand its roster of superheroes on the big screen, with fan-favorite characters making their appearances. Deadpool is set to join the MCU soon, potentially paving the way for the X-Men to follow suit.

Before Disney’s acquisition of Marvel, several of its characters were licensed to Sony. This included the first two Deadpool films, various X-Men movies, and the original Spider-Man trilogy. Over the years, many of these characters returned to Marvel, including Ghost Rider. In the early 2000s, Sony produced two Ghost Rider films featuring Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider. There were talks of a third film, but it never materialized. Now that Marvel/Disney has regained control of the character, are they planning a Ghost Rider 3?

As of now, there are no official plans from Disney and Marvel to create a Ghost Rider 3. While there’s no immediate revisit of the character on the horizon, fans continue to express their enthusiasm for it. In a 2022 interview on a late-night show, Keanu Reeves mentioned that Ghost Rider would be his “dream Marvel role.” The idea of Reeves as Ghost Rider has generated excitement among fans. Additionally, Norman Reedus has also shown interest in taking on the role of the flaming skeleton character. Many actors are eager to portray Ghost Rider.

Even if they choose not to revisit Johnny Blaze, other iterations of Ghost Rider exist. The current Ghost Rider is a younger character named Robbie Reyes. Marvel could explore even more unconventional versions, such as when Frank Castle, aka Punisher, became the Cosmic Ghost Rider, traversing space on a motorcycle. There’s even a prehistoric version of the character who rode a woolly mammoth instead of a motorcycle. The flexibility of the Ghost Rider concept offers numerous possibilities. So, while there are no immediate plans, the world could certainly use more flaming motorcycle-riding skeletons, and fans remain hopeful for Ghost Rider’s return to the MCU.
