In February 2018, the development of a live-action adaptation of Disney’s 2002 animated film “Lilo & Stitch” was announced by The Hollywood Reporter. However, specific details about the project remained scarce until recently, when the key cast members were revealed.

The live-action rendition of “Lilo & Stitch” is following in the footsteps of several other Disney classics, such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” “Aladdin,” and “Mulan,” which have all received the live-action treatment. The recent announcement by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson regarding the live-action adaptation of “Moana” further underlines Disney’s commitment to reimagining its animated catalog for contemporary audiences.

Zach Galifianakis was the first confirmed member of the cast, set to voice the character of Pleakley, although specific details surrounding his role have not been disclosed. Maia Kealoha, a budding talent from Hawaii, was chosen to play the titular character of Lilo, while Sydney Elizabeth Agudong was selected for the role of Nani, Lilo’s older sister. Newcomer Kahiau Machado is taking on the character of David Kawena, Nani’s love interest and Lilo’s friend.

Chris Sanders, the original creator and voice behind Stitch, is in final negotiations to reprise his role for the live-action version, bringing a sense of continuity to the project. The directorial responsibilities have been entrusted to Dean Fleischer Camp, recognized for the endearing indie sensation “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” while Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, a native of Hawaii, is expected to finalize the script.

While no official release date has been announced for the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake, it is anticipated to be a significant feature for Disney+, although the possibility of a theatrical release has not been ruled out.
