Danganronpa creator hints at possibility of new game in the series

Kazutaka Kodaka, the creator of the popular Danganronpa series, has revealed that he is open to the idea of returning to the franchise at some point in the future. Currently, he is working on a new game titled Master Detective Archives: Rain Code, a dark fantasy game that takes place in a city that is constantly being battered by rain. The game is set to be released in spring 2023 for the Nintendo Switch.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, the first game in the Danganronpa series, was released on the PS Vita in 2010, and it was followed by two sequels, an anime, and several spin-offs. Each mainline title follows a group of high school students who become trapped, with the only way out being to murder a classmate and get away with it. If the murderer is found, they are executed, but if they are not, they are allowed to continue living with the others. Throughout the games, players must navigate through a series of murder mysteries, each with their own twists and turns.

In an interview with Twinfinite, Kodaka stated that he has a lot of ideas and that he wants to create something new. He went on to say that he wanted to create a new IP, and since Spike Chunsoft, the publisher of the Danganronpa series, was not pushing for a new game in the franchise, he decided to move on. However, he did mention that he may return to Danganronpa someday in the future.

Kodaka acknowledged that Danganronpa is a niche series, and now that he has the opportunity to work on a larger project, he is excited to try new things. However, he also stated that he loves the Danganronpa franchise and that he would be open to revisiting it at some point. He added that he doesn’t want to do the same things as everyone else, and that he would rather take risks and do something different.

The last mainline title in the Danganronpa series was Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, which was released in 2017. The game introduced several new features, including Mass Panic Debates, which added a new layer of complexity to the trials. The game also continued the series’ tradition of killing off beloved characters, leaving players on the edge of their seats throughout the entire experience.

Danganronpa Decadence, a collection containing the first three mainline titles, as well as a new spin-off title called Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp, is currently available for the Nintendo Switch. With its unique blend of murder mystery and visual novel gameplay, the Danganronpa series has earned a dedicated fan base over the years, and fans are eagerly awaiting news of Kodaka’s next project, whether it be a new IP or a return to the world of Danganronpa.
