“What type of bread do you create from scratch in more ways than one? In Darling in the FranXX, Futoshi’s bread in the final episode caught my attention. It appeared in a future where they all lived happily on a restored Earth. Amidst the space-related plot, the thread focusing on Earth’s renewal and rebuilding got somewhat overshadowed. Nonetheless, seeing the bread at the end was a pleasant surprise. It made me wonder if their farming efforts truly succeeded and how they managed to make the soil fertile again. Bread serves as a significant indicator of a thriving civilization.
While it’s evident that they could have children and replenish the human population, we don’t know the full extent of their growth. However, the presence of bread offers a vital clue. To make bread, you need to grow wheat, collect and mill the grain, grind it into flour, combine it with water and yeast, and shape the dough into loaves. All of this requires considerable effort and resources, especially in a society relearning these skills without the aid of technology. So, is this bread worth the time and effort? Absolutely. Who doesn’t enjoy bread, especially when it comes in cute shapes?
Here’s the recipe for Futoshi’s Bread:
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 package Active Dry Yeast
- 1 tbsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Salt
- 3/4 cup Water
- 1/3 cup Milk
- 1 tbsp Butter
- 2 Eggs
- Red candies or berries for eyes
Instructions:
- Whisk together the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar.
- Warm the milk, water, and butter in the microwave or on the stove until it’s warm to the touch (around 120-130 F).
- Stir the milk mixture into the flour until the dough starts to come together. Add one egg.
- Turn the dough out onto a table and knead for about 15-20 minutes until it becomes soft, smooth, and pliable.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest in a warm place until it doubles in size (about 60 minutes).
- Punch the air out of the dough and divide it into 6 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and then into a teardrop shape. Cut the tail feathers of the creature into thirds and shape them accordingly. Place the shapes on a baking sheet and add candies or berries for eyes. Cover with a damp cloth and let them rest for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400 F.
- Mix the remaining egg with a splash of water. Brush the tops of the buns with the mixture and bake in the oven at 400 F for 20 minutes or until they turn golden brown and are fully cooked.
- Enjoy the bread with butter and jam!
