A recent report alleges that Disney has chosen to withhold over 20 remastered 4K versions of classic Fox films, opting not to release them in any format.
Disney, once synonymous with animated films, has grown into one of the world’s largest and most recognizable conglomerates, with interests spanning theme parks and media. Its acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019 added to its already extensive catalog of titles, which includes properties acquired from Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm.
According to The Digital Bits, Disney has remastered 20 classic Fox films in 4K but has yet to announce any plans for their release. This means these films won’t be available for video-on-demand, streaming on Disney+, or in physical media formats. However, there may be hope for their eventual release, as Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has entered into an agreement to handle Disney’s physical media releases, potentially streamlining the release process.
Despite the dwindling popularity of physical media, there remains a dedicated audience who appreciates the superior audio and visual quality offered by formats like 4K UHD. Additionally, owning a physical copy ensures long-term access to the content, a feature lacking in digital purchases.
While Disney has emphasized Disney+ as the primary platform for accessing its extensive library, there’s still demand for physical media among enthusiasts. Recent releases of classic Fox films like “Aliens,” “The Abyss,” and “True Lies” in 4K UHD format demonstrate continued interest in physical media.
The new partnership with Sony marks a departure from Disney’s previous approach to physical media distribution, which included offerings like the Disney Movie Club. With the closure of Disney Movie Club in July, Disney aims to streamline its physical media operations under Sony’s management. This move could potentially lead to a more efficient production and distribution process, benefiting consumers by increasing access to a wider range of titles.
