The finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender, titled “Sozin’s Comet”, is a four-part episode that brings the war to an end and concludes the story of Avatar Aang and his friends. The first part, “The Phoenix King”, sets the stage for the final showdown between Aang and Fire Lord Ozai, as well as the redemption of Prince Zuko and the defeat of Azula.
In the opening scene of “The Phoenix King”, Aang informs Zuko that he has decided to wait until after the passage of the titular comet to fight Ozai. The comet will infuse all firebenders, including Ozai, with the power of a thousand suns, making him nearly invincible. Aang, who has not yet mastered fire or earthbending, plans to wait until the comet goes away before challenging Ozai. However, Zuko reveals that his father plans to use the comet’s power to burn down the entire Earth Kingdom, effectively ending all opposition to his rule. Ozai has dubbed himself the Phoenix King and plans to reduce the entire world to ashes with the help of a fleet of flying ships. Thus, waiting for the comet to pass may be too late.
Aang faces another dilemma as he struggles with the idea of killing Ozai. Due to his Air Nomad training, he finds himself unable to take a human life, even if it means saving the world. Aang seeks guidance from the spirits of past Avatars, who all tell him that he must kill Ozai to bring an end to the war.
However, during his meditation, Aang discovers that the island he is on is actually the back of a giant lion turtle, the last of its kind and a guardian to humanity. The lion turtle bestows upon Aang the power of energy-bending, a rare ability that allows him to bend the life energy within a person. The lion turtle warns Aang to keep his heart pure and his spirit strong against hate and corruption.
In “Avatar Aang”, the final part of “Sozin’s Comet”, Aang faces off against Ozai in a battle for the fate of the world. Aang enters the Avatar state and gains control over all four elements, but he loses control of his mind and almost succumbs to Ozai’s hateful spirit. With the power of energy-bending, Aang takes away Ozai’s firebending and leaves him powerless and defeated.
Meanwhile, Zuko and Katara confront Azula, the Fire Nation princess and Ozai’s favored child. Azula has gone mad with power and paranoia, believing that her friends are plotting against her. In a stunning fight scene, Zuko and Katara manage to overcome Azula and strip her of her bending abilities. The scene is a culmination of Zuko’s character arc, as he finally accepts his destiny and takes his place as the rightful heir to the Fire Nation throne.
The finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender is a masterful conclusion to a groundbreaking series. It delivers on the promises of its characters, themes, and storylines and leaves viewers with a sense of hope and closure.
