Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2023), produced by Disney’s subsidiary, The Walt Disney Company, paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of King T’Challa, the iconic Black Panther. Following the events of Wakanda Forever, Disney is extending the exploration of Wakanda’s past and future in an official sequel spinoff.
The sequel, titled Eyes of Wakanda, aims to delve into Wakandan history, focusing on brave warriors tasked with retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts around the world. With the fate of Wakanda hanging in the balance, Princess Shuri has passed on the Black Panther mantle, leaving M’Baku as the new King of Wakanda. The series also explores the tentative truce between Wakanda and the underwater nation of Talokan, led by Namor/K’uk’ulkan.
Eyes of Wakanda, announced through an official Disney press release and accompanied by an exciting sizzle reel, presents an opportunity to explore the past and future of vibranium. The series could address recent MCU events leading to Avengers 5 and Avengers 6, including Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
While it remains uncertain whether Eyes of Wakanda is distinct from Ryan Coogler’s Wakanda project announced in February 2021, the series has the potential to provide Marvel fans with depth and substance. As the MCU introduces the X-Men and explores powerful metals like adamantium, a vibranium-centered Disney+ show could offer intriguing stories and politics surrounding these valuable resources.
The series sets a precedent for the geopolitical conflicts expected in Captain America: Brave New World and brings back fan-favorites like General Okoye, War Dog Nakia, Everett Ross, M’Baku, and key Dora Milaje warriors Ayo and Aneka, promising a captivating exploration of Wakanda’s rich history and vibrant characters.
