Konietzko discusses the hiatus of the ‘Avatar’ universe since ‘The Legend of Korra’ ended in 2014.
Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of the ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ series, explained the reason behind the slowdown of the franchise after the conclusion of ‘The Legend of Korra’ in 2014. Following the story of Aang in the original series, Konietzko and his team immediately began working on the tale of the next Avatar. However, after a decade of working on both shows, they felt exhausted. In a recent interview, Konietzko shared his feelings when ‘The Legend of Korra’ reached its end:
“After Korra, Mike and I were burnt out on TV and production. Executing a vision with a team is challenging… I started ‘Avatar’ fueled by inspiration, but by the end, I had run out of that fuel… I took a break from animation and found things that refueled my creativity that I hadn’t experienced since the beginning of ‘Avatar’ twenty years ago.”
The ‘Avatar’ series follows the Avatar, the only person capable of mastering all four elements. In the first series, the audience follows Aang, a young boy who is awakened from an iceberg after a century of being trapped. With the help of new friends, Aang embarks on a journey to master the elements and bring balance to the world.
The second series focuses on Korra, the next Avatar after Aang. Set seventy years later, the show deals with more complex themes as Korra protects Republic City from various threats.
Looking ahead, Konietzko and co-creator DiMartino are leading Avatar Studios, where they are developing new movies and television series set in the ‘Avatar’ universe. The first feature film, exploring a period of Aang’s life not covered in the shows, is currently in production. While no release date has been announced, the project’s progress suggests a potential return of the Avatar in the coming years.
